About the RSA Certificate (Responsible Service of Alcohol)

The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate is required for anyone who serves, supplies or promotes alcohol in a commercial setting in Australia. This includes bar staff, bottle shop workers, waitstaff, event staff, and gaming venue employees. The nationally accredited unit of competency is SITHFAB021, Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol. While the qualification is nationally recognised, delivery requirements and renewal periods vary by state.

The RSA assessment covers four areas:

Important: RSA requirements differ by state. NSW certificates require renewal every 5 years. Victoria requires renewal every 3 years (and from 1 December 2025, a mandatory SHARPR module via the LCV Learning Hub must be completed). QLD, WA, SA and TAS certificates do not expire once issued. Check your state's current requirements before starting employment.
