About the Motorcycle Rider Knowledge Test
Before you can hold a motorcycle learner licence in Australia, you must pass a Rider Knowledge Test (RKT), also called the Motorcycle Knowledge Test in some states. Like the car DKT, it is a multiple-choice assessment, but it focuses specifically on the road rules, safety practices and licensing conditions relevant to motorcycles and mopeds. It is administered by the road authority in each state.
The test covers four areas:
- Road Rules for Riders: give way rules, speed limits, lane filtering (where permitted), overtaking, roundabouts, intersections, and road markings specific to motorcycles

Important: Motorcycle learner riders must ride a LAMS-approved (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) motorcycle. Riding a non-LAMS motorcycle on a learner or provisional licence is illegal and can result in fines, demerit points, and licence suspension.
