About AHPRA Nursing Registration Assessment

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), requires internationally qualified nurses to demonstrate they meet Australian registration standards before they can practise. The main pathway for overseas-trained nurses is the Outcome Based Assessment (OBA), which includes a Computer-Based Test (CBT), a multiple-choice examination, followed by a supervised practice period. Australian-trained nurses must also meet NMBA standards through their approved nursing programmes.

The CBT knowledge assessment covers four domains:

Important: English language proficiency is a separate requirement for AHPRA registration. Internationally qualified nurses must demonstrate proficiency via OET (score of B in all four components) or IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 in each band). Meeting the knowledge test benchmark does not waive the language requirement.

AHPRA and the NMBA do not provide practice questions for the CBT knowledge assessment. TestReady AU fills that gap with 100+ realistic nursing knowledge questions across all four practice domains, with step-by-step explanations for every answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Internationally qualified nurses applying for AHPRA registration must pass the NCLEX-RN (from 2024) or the Nursing Council of New Zealand assessment if migrating from NZ. Domestically trained nurses complete AHPRA's registration process upon graduating from an accredited program.
The NCLEX-RN covers safe and effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity. It uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) and ranges from 75 to 265 questions. You need to demonstrate clinical decision-making across all categories.
AHPRA requires internationally qualified nurses to demonstrate English proficiency, academic equivalence and competency. TestReady AU covers the core clinical knowledge and decision-making areas assessed in nursing competency examinations.
