About the Food Safety Supervisor Certificate

The Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) certificate is required by law for food businesses in most Australian states and territories. Any food business that handles potentially hazardous food must have at least one certified Food Safety Supervisor on staff. The certificate is obtained by completing nationally accredited training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and passing a knowledge assessment. Training is aligned to food safety legislation and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) principles.

The assessment covers four areas:

Important: FSS certificate validity periods differ by state. In NSW, the certificate is valid for 5 years before requiring renewal. VIC, QLD and SA also require renewal. Businesses operating without a qualified Food Safety Supervisor can be issued fines by environmental health officers during inspections.
