About the Australian Security Licence Assessment

Working in the private security industry in Australia, as a security guard, crowd controller, loss prevention officer or cash-in-transit officer, requires a state-issued security licence. Licensing is administered by state police licensing agencies, and the knowledge assessment is based on nationally accredited qualifications: CPP20218 (Certificate II in Security Operations) for guards, or CPP30619 (Certificate III in Security Operations) for crowd controllers. All applicants must pass a National Police Check as part of the licensing process.

The knowledge assessment covers four areas:

Important: A National Police Check is mandatory for all security licence applicants. Certain convictions, particularly violence, fraud or drug-related offences, will result in refusal of a licence. Each state licensing authority makes its own determination; having a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify you, but is assessed case by case.
