About the Australian Police Aptitude Test
Each state and territory police force in Australia runs its own recruitment process, but all include a cognitive aptitude assessment. These tests measure the core reasoning skills required for policing: verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, and abstract or spatial reasoning. Forces including NSW Police, Victoria Police, Queensland Police Service and WA Police Force all use aptitude testing as a mandatory stage of their selection process.
The aptitude component typically covers three areas:
- Verbal Reasoning: reading comprehension, written rule application, true/false/cannot say passages, vocabulary, and written communication assessment
- Numerical Reasoning: percentages, ratios, basic statistics, data interpretation from tables and graphs, and speed/distance/time problems
- Abstract Reasoning: identifying patterns in sequences of shapes, grids, and diagrams; spatial logic and non-verbal problem solving
NSW Police uses the ACER-designed Police Entrance Exam. Victoria Police uses a separate cognitive ability battery. QLD Police and WA Police use their own formats. All cover the same three core domains.
Important: Most Australian state police forces enforce a stand-down period of 6 to 12 months if you fail or score below the required standard. You cannot reapply during that period. A second failure can result in a longer stand-down or permanent bar from that force. Preparation is not optional.
