About the CASA Helicopter Licence Theory Exams
To obtain a Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), PPL(H), or a Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) in Australia, you must pass a series of written theory exams set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) through the Aspeq examination system. The helicopter theory subjects overlap significantly with fixed-wing PPL subjects, but include helicopter-specific aerodynamics, systems, and performance content that does not apply to aeroplanes.
The PPL(H) theory exams cover seven subjects:

- Human Factors: aviation physiology, spatial disorientation, decision making, stress management, and fatigue in rotary-wing operations
Important: Helicopter aerodynamics introduces concepts with no direct aeroplane equivalent, autorotation, vortex ring state, translational lift, and retreating blade stall are helicopter-specific failure modes that are tested in detail. These are not transferable from fixed-wing knowledge and require dedicated study.
