About the CASA Helicopter Licence Theory Exams

To obtain a Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), PPL(H), or a Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter) in Australia, you must pass a series of written theory exams set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) through the Aspeq examination system. The helicopter theory subjects overlap significantly with fixed-wing PPL subjects, but include helicopter-specific aerodynamics, systems, and performance content that does not apply to aeroplanes.

The PPL(H) theory exams cover seven subjects:

Important: Helicopter aerodynamics introduces concepts with no direct aeroplane equivalent, autorotation, vortex ring state, translational lift, and retreating blade stall are helicopter-specific failure modes that are tested in detail. These are not transferable from fixed-wing knowledge and require dedicated study.

Key CASA Helicopter Exam Facts to Know

CASA does not publish practice questions or sample exams for helicopter theory subjects. TestReady AU fills that gap with 100+ realistic questions across all seven subject areas, with step-by-step explanations for every answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

For an Australian Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), CASA requires the BAK (Basic Aeronautical Knowledge) exam, which covers air law, navigation, meteorology, human factors, aircraft general knowledge, and VFR flight rules, specifically for rotary wing operations.
The core syllabus is similar, but the helicopter BAK includes rotary-wing-specific questions on autorotation, retreating blade stall, ground resonance, translational lift, and hovering performance. TestReady AU covers both the shared content and helicopter-specific topic areas.
You need 70% or higher to pass the CASA BAK examination. The exam has 50 multiple-choice questions with a 90-minute time limit. Three failures require additional training before a further attempt is permitted.
