About the Traffic Controller Certification

Anyone working as a traffic controller on public roads in Australia must hold a state-recognised Traffic Control Certificate. The certification is delivered by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) and involves both a written knowledge assessment and a practical component demonstrating safe use of Stop/Slow bats, communication with workers and motorists, and compliance with traffic management plans. The unit of competency is CPTTC1001 (previously RIIWHS302E) or equivalent state frameworks.

The knowledge assessment covers four areas:

Important: Traffic control certification requirements differ by state. NSW requires a WorkSafe Traffic Controller card (issued after completing CPTTC1001 through an approved RTO). VIC, QLD and WA have their own accreditation frameworks. Working as a traffic controller without the correct state certification is illegal and can result in significant fines for both the individual and the contractor.
